THREE (3) of our Scholars and #BIOSCRIBES from the Vereen Research Institute #VRI were able to present their peer reviewed undergraduate research at the National Council on Undergraduate Research meeting! This work was funded through Dr. Vereen's National Science Foundation grant. We are thankful for the funding support as these efforts help to support keeping our scholars engaged in their pursuit of future STEM careers, and allow for opportunities such as this for them to interact with the broader scientific community as they share their work and have it recognized on a national stage!
Morehouse College Starts VR Classes With VictoryXR
Morehouse College is proud to announce the creation of its first Virtual Reality (VR) classes in a partnership with VictoryXR. This partnership is the latest innovation in academic offerings in the ‘Morehouse Beyond Borders’ portion of president David Thomas’ strategic plan for the school.
Morehouse is teaching three classes in VR using the Victory XR platform (based on Engage), with support from Qualcomm, which provided an Oculus Quest 2 to students. The Quest utilizes the Qualcomm’s XR2 chip set, as does every other mobile VR headset with the exception of Magic Leap (for now). Using this headset, remote students meet on a virtual Morehouse campus to attend their virtual classes.
The first three classes to be taught on the digital twin VR campus are Men’s Health taught by Dr. Ethell Vereen, World History taught by Dr. Ovell Hamilton, and Inorganic Chemistry taught by Dr. Muhsinah Morris. A fourth course, Blacks in Wonderland that is a First Year Experience course, is in development by Dr. Tanya Clark and will launch in VR later this academic year. Mr. Dushunte Carmon, assistant director of sponsored academic initiatives at Morehouse, has also been instrumental in creating new virtual experiences for students and helping to bring about innovation that will be used as a model at other institutions.

Members of the VRI, Mr. DeYante Prince and Mr. Keyon Whyte share their summer research findings at the 2019 Morehouse College STEM Student Summer Research Poster Presentation.
DeYante participated in the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program in Woods Hole, Massachusetts this summer, and conducted research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution with Dr. Lauren Mullineaux and Mrs. Susan Mills, Emeritus Research Scholar. DeYante’s project focused on the colonization dynamics of colonists at deep-sea hydrothermal vents located along the East Pacific Rise. He is excited to return to Morehouse and the VRI where he will be able to use the skills and techniques he garnered over the summer in further preparation of his journey towards graduation and his career.
Keyon participated in the Morehouse College Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program this summer, and conducted research with Dr. Ethell Vereen at the Environmental Microbial Genomics Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he also worked with Mr. Blake Lindner. Keyon's project focused on conducting preliminary assessments of water quality and ecosystem health of Procter Creek, an urban watershed. He is excited to return to Morehouse and the VRI to continue working on this project.
